(Edit: Looking at this again, I feel like it needs more open space and balance. As it is now, the attack of negative positive space is exciting and bold, but not quite the effect I want, as far as getting across the essence of the music within. I put a sheet of white paper on it, blocking out the top, then the bottom. I feel now that each section would function much more elegantly (though perhaps less intensely) on its own. So I am going to just use the top of the design for the front cover, and will add small circles above and below it to give it smooth rhythm and enhance the motion, like a mechanism. The circles will probably have textured/detailed designs contained within them. The bottom portion of this design, with the pyramid and eye, will be transferred the inside cover.)
This is done entirely by hand, with ink, ruler, and 0.10 and 0.30 rapidograph pens on blank bristol. No pre-lined paper. There are some flaws and ink bleeds that need to be edited out, but I wanted to do it this way because a) I have no computer knowledge or programs with which to create this and b) I wanted the process to parallel ancient calligraphy and illumination.
The main design at the top is based on the Square Kufic script of Arabic letters. This script is quite ancient and was used for inscriptions and illumination. At first, I felt strange using a script usually associated with sacred inscription for a design on an album cover, but I have done this project with complete respect and reverence for the ancient calligraphers.
This design uses the forms of Square Kufic to read as English letters. It is in three rows and reads: UCCELLO SYMMETRIA PROJECT
You have gone in incredibly rich directions since I last saw your work. The balance between control and expression gives pause. You've definitely stayed true.
This is very well done, eye-catching, and give curiosity about what is inside. It is impossible to read...But that may not be a problem, depending of what is on the other side. I really like this design.
I just figured out what to do with this. I've been uncomfortable with how it turned out, but due to not having any digital graphics implements, the process of change and alteration is too laborious to contemplate. What I am going to do with this is cut out the bottom part (and use it on the inside cover) and use the top maze part as the center of the cover. Top and bottom will be circular motifs filled with weird beasties or whatnot, maybe balanced by a couple small triangles. Oh, there, finally realized why I was not happy. The bottom is not necessary to this...
i didn't realize that you were unhappy with this one.
i think the bottom portion looks fine, but i could just as easily see the maze with a different top and bottom like you said. now that you've mentioned it, it does seem like it could look really good in the middle of something as opposed to being on top.
are you going to place the bottom portion on a page of it's own, or are will it be accompanied by further imagery?
I think the bottom will be moved to the inside cover, where there will be some album info text. I think I will try to squeeze in some more drawing there too. Not sure if there will be room though.
What makes me realize each part would be better alone is putting a sheet of white paper to block one part out. They look way smoother and the intestiy balances with austerity. Plus a circle at top and bottom will accentuate the movement of the negative/positive flow in the main design. Essentially like a mechanism.
