Artist's Comments

Salvaged this from the recent destruction of a large, failed ink painting. Been playing with these grids, which are modelled on ancient Chinese seal script, used for the red stamp signatures. This one combines the alchemical sign for Antimony with the Chinese character for 'forest'. There is a meaning somehwere in there, but I am not quite conscious of it...

Many thanks for the kind comment, it means a lot coming from a skilled calligrapher such as yourself!

I love the linework and style. It reminds me of a maze. Subtle and exotic.

if something happen between two people and one of them(or even both) forgot all about that, did that "something" even ever happen then?

Technically this stylization of characters comes from Chinese seal script, and can be found mainly in the red seal signatures of Chinese paintings, but you are right, the 'forest' character as depicted here is found in Japanese mon in exactly this grid style. I have a book that contains a similar 'forest' character contained in a circle. The 'forest' character is one of the most readily converted to this square form, very pleasing to the eye. What I have done is incorporate a sign from a different tradition, European alchemy, and give it similar characteristics. I wanted to see if I could create an internal logic, an asymmetric rhythm and flow, while combining these signs. Thanks for your insightful comments, it is much appreciated...
